Program

From 25 to 28 March 2019, several hundred international BIM experts will meet at the Hilton Dusseldorf to work together on neutral standards for the exchange of information. In addition to the working group meetings, the program also includes plenary sessions with important keynote speeches and discussion rounds as well as a Welcome Dinner.

Immediately afterwards, on 29 March 2019, the 17th buildingSMART User Day will take place at the same location. In four parallel sections, our participants can expect more than thirty lectures in very different topic panels. Beside exchanging experiences on more technical topics related to digital planning, construction and operation, the focus will also be on the framework conditions, such as law, changemanagement or qualification.

Participation is open to all interested parties.
Tickets can be ordered online.

Target group and topics

Specialist lawyers for building law, legal advisors and all construction experts involved in tendering, awarding contracts and drafting contracts are invited to this first international working meeting. The main topics for discussion include new liability risks, challenges in public procurement law and legal issues relating to data procurement and management (Life Cycle Data Management - LCDM).

Participation is reserved for members of buildingSMART International and national chapters of buildingSMART.

We expect the participation of legal experts from all over the world. The conference language is English. The number of participants is limited to 30. If you are interested, please send a short letter of motivation to our buildingSMART Law Section: FG-Recht@buildingSMART.de

In the event that your expression of interest can still be considered, you must purchase a ticket entitling you to attend the buildingSMART International Standards Summit working group meetings on that day.

If you would like to participate in the workshop with your own presentation, please send us a short abstract (max. 1,500 characters incl. spaces): FG-Recht@buildingSMART.de We ask for your understanding that we may not be able to consider all applications at this first working session.

Background
The BIM method does not only lead to questions of a technical nature. Rather, there are also legal issues that are new to the construction and real estate industries. For this reason, an international group of experts was founded within buildingSMART to deal with new legal challenges related to the BIM method. The group is aimed at lawyers and attorneys at law, but also at specialised technicians and consultants, precisely because the newly arising legal issues also require a technical understanding.

12-16 attendees
Meeting Room: SAC Room
Time: 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Background:

Digital Twin is fast becoming the most talked about phrase, spawning from the manufacturing industry as a method to describe a virtual representation of a physical asset. In short, a digital twin has many uses. It can be used for design optimization, stakeholder collaboration, management of existing asset performance and a method for firms that are going digital. Digital twins are used throughout the product lifecycle to simulate, predict, and optimize the product and production system before investing in physical prototypes and assets. The combination and integration of digital twins as they evolve is also known as the digital thread – a digital methodology for connecting and converging for better decision-making.

Purpose of Roundtable:

buildingSMART is hosting an invitation-only roundtable to bring together leading minds spanning various industries to develop a program for effective use of digital twins. From technical adoption, to the shaping of new business models, buildingSMART is providing an environment for discussion and input. This session will be an opportunity for attendees to

  • Input into the strategic direction of buildingSMART’s activities
  • Help to develop a working plan for Digital Twins
  • Network with other leading industry professionals
  • Be part of a formation group to deliver new initiatives for the industry

12-16 attendees
Meeting Room: SAC Room
Time: Noon - 2:30 p.m.

Background:

Building information modeling (BIM) has become a term to represent a process for better designing and constructing assets in the built environment. The potential for BIM has the potential to go beyond its initial inception as a means to server asset performance for better operations and maintenance. The major benefits of BIM deliverables allow for better design collaboration through multi-dimensional models enabled by digital workflows. BIM however lacks geo-coordinated awareness and has it’s limitations for modeling terrains, cities and other planning activities. Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) has directly dealt with master planning, digital terrain modeling and anything that requires information about location and positioning. New technologies have been disrupting these two domains, significantly advancing the availability and use within certain workflows. One workflow that needs immediate attention is the integration between BIM deliverables and geospatial workflows. Today, many cities, engineering, architecture and construction firms do not have consistent workflow for collaboration, digital workflows or connectivity between the two disciplines. This poses an inefficiency challenges and one that needs to be addressed.

Purpose of Roundtable:

buildingSMART is hosting an invitation-only roundtable to bring together leading minds in both sectors. Through the process of facilitated discussion, this meeting will devise a plan for tackling the most urgent BIM/GIS integration and modeling issues. Such issues could include BIM/CityGML workflows for smart cities, geotechnical workflows and better integration between systems. At this roundtable you will be able to;

  • Input into the strategic direction of buildingSMART’s activities
  • Help to develop a working plan for the BIM/GIS integration
  • Network with other leading industry professionals
  • Be part of a formation group to deliver new initiatives for the industry
  • Help develop new standards for buildingSMART

Help develop new standards for buildingSMART!

3 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
bSI Roundtable "Open CDE - Common Data Environment" (Invitation-only)

Host:
buildingSMART International and Frank Weiss, Oracle

This roundtable is by invitation-only. Participants will be invited based on a requirement to have a broad range of organizations represented.

Participation is free of charge, but access is only possible with a valid day ticket for the bSI Standards Summit that very day. If you’d like to register your interest in this roundtable, please email Aidan Mercer at buildingSMART International.

12-16 attendees
Meeting Room: SAC Room
Time: 3 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Background:

A common data environment (CDE) is simply a collaborative environment that connects users and stakeholders to projects and assets. A CDE follows the guidance given under PAS1192, BS1192, ISO 19650 and DIN SPEC 91391 to coordinate information with supply chain members on the project. This article excerpt summarizes a CDE very well: “The Common Data Environment (CDE) is the single source of information for the project, used to collect, manage and disseminate documentation, the graphical model and non-graphical data for the whole project team (i.e. all project information whether created in a BIM environment or in a conventional data format). Creating this single source of information facilitates collaboration between project team members and helps avoid duplication and mistakes”.

Purpose of Roundtable:

buildingSMART is hosting an invitation-only roundtable to develop a project for an open CDE APIs. In collaboration with partners and the industry at large, buildingSMART aims to provide an open service for managing BIM deliverables. With a CDE, users will be able to better manage information, ensuring it is consistent, trusted, accurate and open. To share the benefits of an open, and integrated framework, firms and users will have a better digital potential. At this roundtable you will be able to;

  • Understand the current status
  • Input into the direction of the project
  • Develop a working plan for the open CDE APIs
  • Set the standard behind developing this vision

Please register your interest today. We are looking for breadth of organizations that represent the need to help deliver a CDE.

Please note a ticket to the conference is required.
Confirm your place today by emailing Aidan Mercer at buildingSMART International.
